What is an oculoplastic surgeon?

An oculoplastic surgeon is a qualified doctor who following medical training has first received extensive specialised training as an ophthalmologist to diagnose and manage a wide range of disorders affecting the eyes. He/she then has received further specialist training to manage disorders of eyelids, tear drainage system and orbits. An oculoplastic surgeon is also known as ophthalmic plastic surgeon and ophthalmic reconstructive surgeon.

As well as managing disorders of the eye itself an oculoplastic specialist also manages a wide range of conditions affecting the eyelids and tear drainage system as listed here on the left hand side panel.
