Upper lid Chalazion
Benign eyelid lesions are common and may cause irritation or be unsightly. Styes (infected eyelash follicles) and chalazions (inflammation within glands behind lashes) are often uncomfortable and sometimes painful. They usually resolve spontaneously or following treatment with hot compression and antibiotic eye ointment. A non resolving chalazion may require surgery which is often performed with local anaesthetics.
Other eyelid “lumps and bumps” include non inflamed cysts and papillomas. Not all eyelid lesions require surgery but if they change in shape or size or if they are causing other concerns you should seek advice.
